TOBY FOR HEISMAN GRASS ROOTS CAMPAIGN!
11/30/09 at 2:07am

We've got to do everything we can to get Toby the Heisman Trophy that he so richly deserves. Let's do a grass roots write-in campaign to remind the voters that Toby is truly the Most Outstanding College Football Player this year!

Thanks to that list that Yvonne provided at http://www.stiffarmtrophy.com/voterlist.html we have a list of 577 of the Heisman voters. I've listed the voters below along with a corresponding date of the year.

WHAT TO DO:
1. Go to your birth date and find the voters listed at your birth date.
2. Google those voters' contact information.
3. Send an email or snail mail to those voters about Toby Gerhart.
4. Repeat those steps for 3 (or more!) voters above and below your birth date.
Note: Along with Toby's stats and highlights, it can't hurt to mention that Toby's a pro-calibre baseball player, is taking 21 units, and is a great student and kid. We have to move quickly--ballots are due very soon after December 5th (not sure exactly when) .

QUESTIONS/OTHER STUFF TO DO:
1. Has the Athletic Dept. put out an official, updated Toby-For-Heisman video yet?
2. Can someone post a sample letter (with a link to a Toby-For-Heisman video) so we can copy and paste it? Nobody's going for originality or style points; we just want to get the word out.
3. Can someone whip up a website featuring Toby's stats and a Toby-For-Heisman video? I've just registered TobyForHeisman.com, so if somebody wants to whip this up, send me a message and I'll give you the info for the website. The website doesn't have to be great--we just want to get the word out.

The Birth Dates + Voter information follows below and in several successive posts.

I like the idea, and I'm happy to send something. I have a question for the board's journalists, of which there are many: could this work at all? Would our emails be read or simply trashed?

I think the most effective email would be one that's short, hits the high points, and perhaps has an interesting vignette reporters wouldn't notice unless they've been watching closely. Maybe something about how 2nd and 20 or 3rd and 10 is a passing down for most teams but not Stanford.

I'm also torn about whether or not it's a smart idea to throw in that McCoy and Tebow have been putting up their stats against Mickey Mouse schedules, and haven't even played as well as past years in which they didn't win it.

The sportswriting part of my journalism career was very brief, but one thing I do remember is that the teams who were media savvy got our attention.  It just made life easier.  Moreover, I have always received a response when I have contacted local sportswriters.

When I was a business journalist, I probably paid more attention to known contacts, but was always able to reply to new messages.  I never knew where my next story lead would come from.

Your email should be short and to the point.

Here's a stat that Eric Sorensson wrote for CBSsports.com:

Toby ran for 223, 178 and 136 yards against three ranked teams.

I think I'm going to use that stat I saw during the kal game- if Toby touches the ball on 3rd or 4th down, 83% of the time it's a conversion, which is remarkable considering that Stanford will run Toby on 3rd and 10, like they did against both Oregon and USC, and converted. Perhaps that's why they had Toby, not Luck, throw for the TD on 4th and 4 against ND.

Toby's performance against ranked teams is also impressive. Let's not forget that Washington was ranked when Toby hung 200 on them.

I'll work on a letter today and post it up.

I like the Pale Horse nickname here. On the one hand, you have Tebow, made in God's image and put on earth to spread his good news, and on the other Toby, put on earth to destroy and punish.

The Toby stats are amazing, and they were not obtained in 42-10 style blowouts.  Most of the yards and TDs were needed in very close games against very good teams.

Still, this vote is so done.

Most voters are not changing their votes.  The only exception might be if they are undecided between Ingram and Tebow.  In that case, they may be waiting for the SEC championship game.  Toby best chance to change people's minds was 2nd and 10 from the 13 at Big Game.  Sad

But let's remember all of this for February when Stanford starts the Luck for Heisman campaign.

Home with the flu today (cough, sneeze, cough) so I'm doing my Gerhart homework.

I was assigned Dave Hickman of the Charleston Gazette.  From checking out the Gazette it looks like Hickman isn't paying attention to the race but his fellow columnist, Mitch Vingle claims he just got his ballot and is leaning toward Gerhart.   By the way Vingle isn't on the Stiff Arm list.

http://www.wvgazette.com/Sports/MitchVingle/200911210568

I've sent on my thanks and encouragement to Vingle.  Here's the text:

Quote:
Mitch --

I'm glad to see from your column that you're leaning toward Toby Gerhart for your Heisman vote.   Out here on the West Coast we're pretty thrilled with what Toby has accomplished.   For a Stanford program that exalts over the passing game (Trent Edwards, John Elway, Steve Stenstrom, Jim Plunkett) Gerhart has been a revelation.

One small anecdote to go along with all of the superlative stats on yardage and touchdowns.   At Stanford Gerhart has made 2nd and 10 or 3rd and 8 into a RUNNING down and he converts these at an unheard of rate (83% on 3rd or 4th down).    Some of us old-timers are shaking our heads over seeing him knock off long runs on 3rd downs while knocking over safeties and dragging lineman down the field.

He looks like a Heisman winner to me.   (Now if Harbaugh had only handed him the ball with 35 seconds left in Big Game.  Whole  'nother story.)

Vahe Gregorian is still weighing things.  Howie Beardsley has already made up his mind, and won't vote for a guy from a four-loss team.

a grass roots movement.

But I'm willing.  What's with the birthday date thing, though?  Just a way for a population with their own randomly-distributed birth dates to contact a just a few voters each and that, in turn guarantee that almost all voters get some sort of contact?

Or, have we got some sort of Mayan calendar thing happening here, too,  and those born on the wrong date will be irrelevant to the process soon enough.
