An excerpt from a post on Ca.l Rivals board from a fan I find credible:
Tons of analysts have named the Cardinal their favorites for the Pac12 after viewing their camp live. Raves about the OL, McCaffrey, a great set of TEs and improved play from Hogan. Folks have said their 1st team DL may be the most athletically gifted Stanford has had with Shittu being the star of camp. Young but good is the word. Ditto for their secondary where folks are saying by far the most naturally gifted group they've had but they are young.
The key here is most analysts and pundits sit at their computers doing research on numbers (if they do any), be it last year's stats, or recruiting rankings, and come up with assessments that way, or just yank things out of where the sun don't shine. And we know the writers and coaches who vote in polls don't actually go see the teams at their training camps regardless.
Those who have gone and seen multiple Pac-12 teams at their camps say Stanford is their favorite to win the Pac-12. So despite the youth in the secondary, neutral observers who have seen the Pac-12 teams practice this month, are mucho impressed with what Stanford is shaping up to be. This seems to be quite a meaningful data point to consider.
