Hmm, I'm not seeing either karma or reputation displayed right now. I need to compare notes with Yvonne to understand exactly what happened. I thought the restore from backup might get us back to the +/- post instead of +/- person system, but that may need database changes, not just code changes...

Hmm, I'm not seeing either karma or reputation displayed right now. (Naively, the restore from backup should have switched us back from the per-user karma system to the per-post up/down vote system, but who knows.)

Ah, but if you were hyper-obsessed with this sort of thing and checked your profile you would see . . . the light?

Um, the 67 in your profile is the board's idea of your age, not your karma. Mine is 55, btw.

Karma/popularity contests weren't ever my thing. Post voting was an interesting way of crowdsourcing moderation duties. Maybe if we didn't keep aggregate tally of post up/down votes...

The karma wasn't effective because the votes weren't tied to posts, even in admin view.

Awarding +/- points for posts can be helpful, because a highly positive post is usually worth reading, either because of its analysis or its humor. If I read a post and react negatively to it, and then see that it is running at -4 or something like that, I feel better because I am reminded that the post doesn't reflect the views of the community.
Rating people made less sense. Aside from the fact that the ratings weren't tied to posts, I think it contributed towards animosity between people. If you don't like what someone wrote, the only way to express it, other than to respond to the thread, was to vote the person down, rather than the post. I imagine the ugly "bro" sub-thread probably was exacerbated by the fact that people were down-voting each other.
Still, that being said, I did notice that some of my favorite posters: WIM, CTCard, Terry, Hulk, all had pretty good karma scores. So there's that.

I agree, BC. Karma will not be making a reappearance. I only wish that I could find something equivalent to the Good Post/Bad post because I agree with your assessment of the value of negative voting of posts, not people.
