Apparently it may be a thing, again.  FWIW, my inclination is to support it, because it is more compatible with the notion of a student-athlete than college as the minor leagues.  I don't think the thing driving it should be the handful of one-and-dones in college basketball, but rather the vast majority of players.  That being said, it's a good article that articulates some of the arguments against it.

Would this ultimately amount to an auto-redshirt for freshmen?  In essence, they're ineligible to compete their first year but then they get four more after that?  Or would this burn a year of eligibility?

I support the idea. But, without a viable minor league option for athletes who have no desire to be students, I think it would have limited impact. But it does seem to be, as much as anything, a statement that universities don't want to be seen as ONLY the de facto minor league development system of the NFL and NBA.

It would not be a bad thing at all.  These guys don't want to go to school they just want to get paid.  I'm all for a free market, and I'd rather have kids playing college basketball who actually want to go to school.

It amounts to free marketing for the NBA.  Think about how many people watch guys in college, and then want to continue following them in the pros.  I know I would have absolutely zero reason for caring for the Brooklyn Nets or Portland Trailblazers were it not for the Lopez brothers.  With the best players skipping college by going abroad or to the NBA-D-league, the NBA would lose the exposure that a lot of the best players get before joining the pros.  Not that it has hurt the visibility of Kobe Bryant or LeBron James to have skipped college...

On the other hand, as the NBA continues its global marketing, great young players going abroad for a couple of years (if the NBA pushes its minimum age to 20) could have a similar impact abroad. Could you imagine Andrew Wiggins playing in Shanghai for a couple of years, or Anthony Davis in Beijing, and what a brobdingnagian boon for the NBA in the largest market in the world (and one that is NBA crazy)

I don't think the NBA should have a minimum playing age above 18.  But I do think if a kid wants to play college basketball the rules should be the same as the NFL - minimum 3 seasons before going pro (or age equivalent if they drop out of school).  There are plenty of other options if they don't want to go to college.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but how do you phase in freshman ineligibility without causing each program to be short a year's worth of recruits?  Would you have to expand the number of scholies and then let a few years pass to swell the ranks of the upper classes?  (I only skimmed the article, so if he answered this question, I missed it)

Totally true.  I've been a Warriors fan, but I paid a lot more attention to the NBA when Awtrey, Rambis and Nash played in the league.

As the de facto minor league, the NCAA constitutes a way for college-educated people to connect with basketball.  It's pretty remote for many of them.
