Today in 1994, the California Supreme Court ruled in Hill v. NCAA that NCAA mandatory drug testing was constitutional, overturning a lower court ruling that had provided an injunction against the testing in claiming that it violated a right to privacy.

Why does that make an appearance here? Because the case was originally brought to court in 1987 by three Stanford student-athletes: diving captain Simone LeVant, linebacker Barry McKeever, and soccer co-captain Jennifer Hill. This was just a couple of years before my arrival, so folks who were on campus at the time can feel free to chime in. But no matter one's view of this rule, I am impressed with the courage it took for students to take such a stand while still competing athletically along with negotiating studies and community life.

Huh, I'm not sure Strawberry Fields or Penny Lane would be in my top 20 Beatles list. Penny Lane maybe, but Strawberry Fields?

As for albums, I'll take Abbey Road any day, though Sgt. Pepper is probably #2.

I guess the Beatles are so deeply ingrained in my consciousness, that as soon as I subvocalize "...twenty years ago today," I think Sgt. Pepper (taught the band to play), 1967, and all that went with it. Its like debating how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, but I think/feel Abbey Road is even better than Sgt. Pepper (amazing as it was and is), although I do think, after pondering it for forty-some years, that "A Day in the Life" is the Beatles finest single work.

While I fear it cheapens their music to even use the word "favorite," "Here Comes the Sun" fills that role for me. Maybe, in addition to its simple likability, I am captive to its uncomplicated, unaffected optimism. At least, that's how I hear it and what it does for me.

For me it's Rubber Soul, probably because whenever I listen to it I'm taken right back to fall quarter of my freshman year, and corridor 1-C in Roble Hall, and meeting amazing people and realizing that I was beginning an adventure. And "Michelle" was pretty cool too.

As much as I love Abbey Road, it sounds too much like 3 solo artists sharing a drummer.

The Beatles album I think doesn't get enough love is Help!.  It's got 2 tracks ("You're Gonna Lose That Girl" and "I've Just Seen a Face") that you almost never hear.  And I love them more than the more famous tunes on that album.
