Overview:
Stanford bombed the living daylights out of Tucson, hitting 15/32 three point shots, and making 64% of our shots overall for the game. Meanwhile, our defense held Arizona to only 21 points in the second half. This was a good, well rounded win with many contributors.
Flow of the Game
A very non-suspenseful game after about 5 minutes. To me, the game broke open on a remarkable run of made three pointers with 7 minutes left in the first half:
1. We brought the ball up the court and sent it to Bonnie on the near wing, and she drained a trey.Â
2. Arizona missed at its end.Â
3. We brought the ball up the court and sent it to Karlie on the far wing, and she drained a trey.Â
4. Arizona missed at its end.Â
5. We brought the ball up the court and got it to Bonnie on the near wing, and she drained another trey.Â
6. Arizona missed again at its end.Â
7. We brought the ball up the court and Amber then drained a trey.Â
Four made threes in a row, with no opposing scores. A twelve point swing in 1:25 on the clock. It had to have been utterly demoralizing for the Arizona players, who I began to feel sorry for.
And it kept going, just getting worse and worse for Arizona, as the margin increased to 20, then 30, then 40.
Performances:
Amber had 8 assists and 0 turnovers. She now has one of the leading A/T ratios in the country, and is far and away the best in the Pac 12.Â
Chiney had 24 points and 12 rebounds even though the Arizona defense mostly focused on her. Remember she needs to average about 25 points a game the rest of the way to pass Candice as the all time scoring leader for Stanford.
The other outstanding performance was from all of our three point shooters. Karlie was 4/8, Bonnie was 3/6, Taylor was 3/6, and Lili, Sara, Amber and Kailee all made treys also. I have to keep reminding myself of how difficult it has been the past couple of years to make threes, and how much more fluidly we shoot and make them now. When Bonnie and Karlie started that remarkable three point spurt, they were defended and were shooting from well outside the arc--and hit nothing but net.
Parting Thoughts
Tonight was one of our most balanced performances of the year. The offense was in sync and was able to score with Chiney inside, with backdoor cuts to streaking guards, and by carpet bombing. The defense was solid and suffocated Arizona in the second half. We will get a much sterner test, though, at Arizona State, which is remarkably improved over last year and threatens to be every bit as difficult as Colorado. Let's hope we can keep our focus despite this easy win.
