Toledo kept it close, leading 17-14 at one point, but NIU picked up steam as the game wore on, and Jordan Lynch administered a coup de grace fourth quarter.

I wanted NIU to win out because Fresno St is going to win out and take the single Non-AQ BCS bowl bid. NIU ranking in the top 14 is a good thing because it removes an At-Large BCS bid competitor.

I think that is correct. We want either both to win out, or neither to win out. One and one would be bad.

Reason XXXVIII why I hate the BCS is that as a Stanford fan, I now suddenly have to hate Louisville for losing when earlier in the season I was happy they lost. I now have to hate Northern Illionois, which by all accounts looks like a nice, well run program. I can't avoid thinking in my head: we had to go into the freaking Coliseum to justify our BCS bowl and these guys go into Toledo??
It's pretty obvious the talent at N. Illinois is far worse than a team which is going to contend for the Pac 12 championship. It's not even close. And I would not have said that about Boise teams of years past by the way. Could N. Illinois finish in the middle of the Big 10? Sure. But they wouldn't win the league.Â
I've seen a little of Fresno. Same story. When your "big test" is on the road at San Diego State in a half full stadium taking on Rocky Long/ Bob Toledo, I don't think you have a place in the BCS.Â
There is a variable here which is the voters. The voters should really be asking themselves what seed would these teams get in a playoff. With N.Illinois/Fresno, you are talking about an RPI in the 40s, and probably an 8 or 9 seed, i.e. #32 - 36. Time to reflect that in your rankings.Â

I know the Sagarin ratings sometimes seem kind of goofy, but I was interested to look up the most recent one and discover that Northern Illinois is ranked #46 -- three places behind Eastern Illinois. Has anyone even heard the name of Eastern Illinois this year?
