The colorful history of The Stanford Axe is framed by thievery. Since it’s unveiling in 1899, it has been stolen nine times, the last in 1973.  With advances in technology and security, it may never happen again. Of course, that just makes the 1973 heist even more remarkable.

I am not going to lie. Prior to the '93 game a few of us made the trip to Berkley to make an attempt. It was not feasible, security was awfully tight, so I am ashamed to admit the end result involved urinating on the 50 yard line logo of the stadium field.

I like to think of the Infamous Three (and the Immortal 21) as Axe Redeemers.

And then there are those (stuffed-)animal lovers who liberated Oski from Berkeley.  http://alumni.stanford.edu/get/page/maga...e_id=41553

I have read other Axe theft accounts, but this one is truly epic.  Kudos to the Infamous Three!

I don't know that the story was lost or forgotten. Hal Mickelson refers to it every year in retelling the story of the Axe. It gives him -- and the crowd -- an opportunity to repeat "We'd like to take a picture for the paper," and at the end, he says, "I submit to you ladies and gentelmen that that goes to show how much you can learn in 43 years at Berkeley."
