Looks like redshirt freshman QB Joel Stave, thought to be out for the season, is practicing ahead of schedule (it's unknown whether he'll be ready to play by Jan. 1.)

He's had roughly 6 games of action and has a really superb 9.36 YPA--not a true carry-the-offense type (never attempted more than 25 passes in a game), but seemingly better than Curt Phillips, the sort-of incumbent (7 YPA, 55.3% completion rate. For comparison, Josh Nunes: 52.8% 6.99 YPA).

So, interesting. May be a headfake to prompt extra prep for the coaches, but they'll have to do it.

Tough decision to make.

Thread title is to some other QB competitions the Badgers have had.  The Evridge-Scherer one involved a KState transfer, Evridge,  against the season ending starter, Scherer.  As it turned out, the best QB on the team that year was the third man in the ring, Scott Tolzien. By midseason, he was the starter.  Something like your 2012 QB history.

My gut tells me the starter will be Phillips.  Without his three knee surgeries he'd be a brobdingnagian running threat.  But he's the guy who won the big game and also brought the team back in the two overtime losses the two weeks before the championship game.

Next season we may see California high school product, Bart Houston, as the starter. Unfortunately, he was injured and unable to play this season, but now is starting to practice and has looked good.
