Herbstreit went out of his way to say that the Rose might pick N.D. if there were no 2-loss Pac 12 teams & Oregon went to the NCG.  I don't know why ESPN would go out of their way to stir up this controversy, when the Rose Bowl has said it would take a qualifying Pac 12 team.  I think they just get off on screwing west coast teams, like their absurd RG3 campaign and now what looks like an ND campaign.  I can see them laughing in Bristol... "what's better, us getting 2 SEC teams in the title game or getting RG3 the Voldemort over Luck last year?  Tough call."
