My guess is that a blitzing corner should be handled by a combination of a running back and a hot route. Was it the same corner each time? Unfortunately the interwebz did not yield a stream that I could find.

Thanks, Garvin. I usually count on you to douse my enthusiasm in cold water, so I feel better after reading your assessment of Stanford\'s performance. I caught the second half of the game on the KZSU stream, and the announcers there were considerably less effusive.
In particular, the KZSU guys were concerned about the play of the secondary, the special teams, and the offensive line. The offensive line doesn\'t worry me much, especially because I believe the second string was in at the time these concerns were voiced. Hopefully the special teams will work out the kinks, which sound like they may be at least in part a function of playing time for freshmen. But how did the secondary loook? Did they at least play more aggressively in pass coverage than last year\'s secondary?
By the way, the KZSU announcers identified the receiver on that fourth-quarter Josh Nunes pass as Jamal Patterson.

One key observation that I haven\'t seen noted or discussed in these threads yet (sorry if I just missed someone\'s post) -- since Dave Fowkes\' recap on www.Examiner.com explained what I perceived perfectly, I\'ll just quote him:

Playing against the spread offense the Cardinal played one defense and played it all day long. It was a nickel package. Chase Thomas and Thomas Keiser who converted to outside linebackers for the new defense, were back at ends in the nickel with their hands down. Michael Thomas won the job at safety but in the nickel package he was back as the slot cornerback. UCLA has no tape on the new defense.

I noticed that while at the game, I thought I just kept missing plays where they didn\'t use 5 DBs.  I guess when you play an offense that uses 3+ WRs on every play, your base has to be a nickle.  Good thing I\'m going down to LA for next weeks game and will get to see the 3-4 then  ;D
