How much to ratchet down expectations

I remember the Colorado game in the second season of Walsh II portending the struggles we'd face in the running game and defense for the rest of that season. I also remember that the weakness of the OL last year didn't last more than two more games.
I think this OL may take a little longer to jell, but eventually will. I think the receivers and secondary might be every bit as bad as they seemed last night. I'm in the 6-7 camp.

8-9. I have this vague hope that the defense is going to develop a bit of a vicious chip on their shoulders and despite weaknesses in the secondary, give the offense a chance to keep us in games.Â

1) Fiesta Bowl - playing not to lose mindset.
2-3) As mentioned by others: multiple swing games on the road; better/more experienced offensive player sets (QB,WR,RB,TE) by near rivals (UW, ND, UCLA, Bart)
My most likely number is 7, but holding reasonable hope for 8.

I'm sticking with 8-9, probably on the 8 side instead of the 9. Part of this feeling is also driven by the fact Kal is already losing 14-0 at home to Nevada.
Unrelated, Dave Flemming and Coy Wire are broadcasting this Cal game, I imagine they're enjoying their Pac-12 debut so far.

You guys are panicking. This team was never going to play in a BCS bowl game this year. We lose to Duke or Arizona I'll get worried.

At the 17-3, I thought that the ceiling might be 8 wins this year. At the time I thought there are 5 tough games, and Stanford might win 1 of those 5 to create that 8 win ceiling.
That was BEFORE the SJSU spread type game carved up the Stanford D. It is very hard to imagine that SC and Oregon won't destroy the secondary. It was not hard to imagine 5 or 6 Pac-12 teams passing successfully against that scheme.
Ironically, the front 7 is too good against the run, so even if teams wanted to have a run-oriented game plan it is not going to be their plan. I kept wondering how many of those 7 really need to play the run to stop the run. 4? 5? I almost wanted the D to let SJSU get 3 yards on a run or two to stop the pass game pain.
Hopefully, the team thought SJSU was going to be easy and therefore they just were not prepared. That would be bad coaching, but at least it would leave a lot of room for improvement.
But it was only one game. Afterall SC looked terrible last year against Minnesota and everything turned out OK for them.
