Here's an interesting story I found on CNN. Vicky Triponey found an institutional culture that was focused on football. She took no joy in Freeh's finding. Initially, Triponey found the culture very welcoming, but ultimately discovered that it was hostile to disciplining football players.

My questions:

1. There are undoubtedly other schools equally focussed on football. Will schools begin to police themselves so that this football reverence does not cover over other crimes? How will they do it? Will the NCAA need to step in?
   
2. Could such a thing happen at Stanford?

Yes...but it'll be a long time coming and too late when it arrives.

Sure...but a lot less likely than at any other D-1 school, I'd like to think.

Yes...but it'll be a long time coming and too late when it arrives.

  Keep the NCAA out of it.  THey have already proven they can't handle non-criminal activity (no subpoena power is a serious impediment to their investigations).  re: the other question...  IMO, schools will continue to tread the fine line between reverence to football and maintaining a crime-free atmosphere.  The amount of money at stake for the major programs is too great to think otherwise.  In other words, this horse left the barn years ago.  It is too late to recapture it.

  Anything is possible at any school.  Sadly, no school is immune to criminal action on the part of staff and/or student-athletes.

I think schools will do a much better job of policing crimes that can really, really stigmatize their reputations. 

So, better policing of sex crimes.  Over the top racism.  That type of thing.

All large organizations will be hostile to those who try to stress compliance for compliance's sake, or who try to enforce technical violations or crimes of youthful exuberance.  Especially when those organizations cater to donors who want a successful football program.

All that being said, if most schools were as fly by night in terms of their internal escalation procedures as Penn State, they would benefit by being forced to tighten up their policies and procedures.
