IMO, Vontaze Burflict may be, quietly, one of the main stories from this year's NFL draft. Here is a player who, coming out of HS, was considered perhaps the best LB in his class (along with Manti Teo, who I think was in the same class, along with Shayne Skov). Burflict never suffered a catastrophic injury, was considered by many so-called experts to be the best LB in the Pac 10/12, seemed to many coming into the season as a likely high draft choice, but constantly hurt his team with foolish, undisciplined play. But for someone with that physical skill set to fall COMPLETELY off the draft board? I can only think he had some seriously messed up interviews with NFL teams.
Yes, character and intelligence really do matter, even in a sport like football where the culture emphasizes freakish physical ability and hyper-toughness and machismo.
