Multiple sources with direct knowledge of last week's discussions in South Florida have confirmed to SI.com that the new favored proposal for a four-team playoff within the bowl system would place the two semifinal games at the traditional anchor bowls of the No. 1 and 2 teams' conferences. For example, No. 1 Alabama of the SEC would host the No. 4 team in the Sugar Bowl, while No. 2 USC of the Pac-12 would host the No. 3 team in the Rose Bowl.

It won't be too bad if it's open to champions only. We wouldn't have gone last year, but at least there would be some objective standard. Even in the NCAA basketball tournament, there are teams that seem to belong but are left out, and teams that many feel should have gotten in.

My guess would be that the current BCS AQ schools would get their bowls if/when they are #1 and #2.  I really doubt that the Liberty bowl will become a host even if a Conference USA team finished the regular season at #1 or #2 based on the seeding.  My guess would be that the Fiesta and Orange Bowls would win the rights to host games should the non-BCS teams sneak through the system.

FWIW - I would love to see what happens if Notre Dame is #1 or #2.  That would almost certainly generate chaos.

Also, as a practical matter, the Sugar bowl seems destined to be a semifinal host site almost every year.  Good for New Orleans, I guess.

I don't think we'll have to worry about this possibility for a while. In fact, I'll guess by the time the Domers are in a national championship aspirant position, there'll be a whole new championship system. This four team system is only a temporary fix. I just hope they don't dilute a playoff as they have the basketball equivalent.
