I would think neck size and strength is important for helping to prevent injury in that area.  Look at Peyton Manning.  Look at how Chris Owusu's head was snapped back on some of the hits to the head that he took. A guy whose shoulder and back muscles merge into his neck area for extra support has some extra margin against neck injuries.
