Now our class is complete. Flipping Rector and Hoffpauir, and winning the commitments of Peat, Murphy and Shittu, all on signing day. I'm ecstatic about the way things turned out.

Someone who commits to FSU in the first place is self-selecting his future. While it's true a decent number of recruits hadn't considered Stanford before a Stanford coach started working him, there is still truth in sentence #1. That was his stage, that was the kind of atmosphere and program that resonated with him. I've heard the reports about how close we were and that this was a real challenge to FSU. Ehhh.  I also think the whole delayed announcement thing told us about Jameis, too. Seemed to me that he wanted the stage for himself and you can't do that on Signing Day where somebody new is in the spotlight every four minutes.  So he waited and followed his heart with lots of people paying attention. Good on 'em and good luck. At least we weren't and aren't planning around him.

I think it's better this way. Shaw is clearly comfortable with the 7 QBs at his disposition, and they probably fit into the scheme better.
He already has his eyes on other gems
That sounds too snobbish for my liking. You don't have to come to Stanford to succeed in your academic, business or athletic career.

Lots of kids from Alabama go to FSU. My daughter's best friend in HS went to FSU. Several kids from her class did. It's a certain kind of school. BIG, Florida, casual, mega-social, into their sports in a near-SEC kind of way. Good baseball program. And it carries a lot of clout with kids in the Southeast. A perfectly reasonable place to go to school.Â
But if you choose that kind of school, and are a star athlete, there's a brobdingnagian distance between what you apparently like and what Stanford offers. Remember a lot of our recruits this year echoed and applauded Luck's comments about the atmosphere and how star athletes weren't treated as anybody special. That just seems pretty different place than what Jameis chose in the first place.  Not about snobbery, just a signal as to his tastes and what he wants.

The difference is real and important and shouldn't be obscured by concerns about 'snobbishness.' While it's obvious that one can get a good education at a mediocre, sports obsessed, party-centric school -- and in prison for that matter -- to do so one has to swim against the prevailing culture, one that does not celebrate academic achievement and may even devalue or depreciate it. The prevailing culture at elite universities such as SU is such that academic achievement is not just tolerated but promoted, celebrated, and facilitated. A major difference. Anyone serious about academics and educational achievement couldn't choose FSU over SU unless other considerations, such as staying close to home, wanting one's parents to be able to attend all of one's games, playing with buddies, or having superior coaches or facilities, trumped one's alleged keen interest in getting a great education.
