Stanford had three relatively easy match wins over Vanguard and UC-Merced over the past 10 days. 

Vanguard is a full, NCAA Division 2 team (like UC San Diego used to be...in 2020, UC-SD transferred to D-1) having transferred from NAIA and this is their first year in the MPSF. Stanford had a bit of a scare in the first match, losing the first set 22-25, then winning three with comparative ease (25-21, 25-17 and 25-17). Stanford hit .404 as a team, best in a very long time. Only 29 total errors in four games, just about unheard of. Kosty emptied the bench as seldom used players had a chance to play.

The next day was a bit tougher, though Stanford won in straight sets. Scores 26-24, 25-14 and 29-27.  34 errors in three sets, Stanford's hitting fell to .263. 

Stanford beat the Golden Bobcats of UC-Merced, their first year in D2. 25-19, 25-19, 25-22. Stanford hit .280. 32 overall errors. Kosty emptied the bench again. Lineup was McFall (.375), Kneisl (.381), Brito (.280), Mandelbaum (.200), Gant (23 assists as backup setter), Wolff (.091), Schmitt (.000) and DuRoss (.000).

Stanford plays UC-San Diego at 6 p.m. at Burnham Pavilion today.

Moses Wagner had a rough day, hitting .171 with 7 errors and 13 kills. Theo did better at .357, but Stanford overall hit .254 against UC-SD's .339. UC-SD's defense was tough, 12 blocks to Stanford's six. Stanford had 56 overall errors to UC-SD's 48.

This was Stanford's third five-set loss in the last seven matches. The overall record is 7-6.

At least the schedule gets easier. Stanford plays #2 UCLA at UCLA this Thursday and Friday.

Thanks for the updates.  If Stanford had been able to close out sets a little better here and there, their record could be much better.  I don't see Rottman in the cumulative statistics for the season.  If I'm seeing that correctly this must be a red shirt year for him.  Well, at least things get easier this coming weekend playing UCLA.

In last night's MPSF opener, Stanford took the first game of a four-set loss to UCLA at UCLA (25-23, 12-25, 21-25, 19-25). 

Again, Theo Snoey played well hitting .344 with a team-leading 15 kills. Moses Wagner had a tough time with 7 kills, 6 errors and a 0.45 hitting percentage. Nate Clinton had just four kills and six errors, hitting -0.111. Stanford's middles Luke McFall and Kaumana Carreira had 11 kills on 17 swings, no errors, hitting .647. They just didn't get enough sets.

Overall, Stanford had 41 errors while UCLA had 48, but UCLA hit .416 as a team (Stanford hit .236) with 17 blocks and 8 service aces against 4 for Stanford. UCLA was missing their First-team All-America setter Andrew Rowan in favor of true freshman Trent Taliaferro.

The two teams play again tonight at 7 p.m.

Wagner was 14 K, 5 errors, 33 attempts for .273 to lead the pin hitters. DuRoss had two kills and three errors. Theo Snoey had 13 kills, 8 errors in 31 attempts. Kau Carreira, rapidly turning into the best middle, had 7 kills and two errors in 12 attempts. The other MBs, Gray Mandelbaum had two kills and two errors in 4 attempts and Luke McFall had two kills and 1 error in five attempts. Frosh Libero Evan Porter had 11 digs, second time this season he's hit double figures.

Second match was 22-25, 25-18, 20-25 and 16-25. Not good, but there was some improvement at the margins. Stanford led in kills (51-50) and assists (50-48), they usually walk hand in hand, and digs, 26-24. Pepperdine led in aces 2-1 and a big lead in blocks, 12-6. This match, Ryan DuRoss started at OH and had a season-high 11 kills. Theo Snoey had the edge with 18 kills and 8 errors for a .250 hitting percentage whereas Moses Wagner was 8 kills and 6 errors for a 0.080 hitting percentage. MB Luke McFall had nine kills in just 11 attempts and Kau Carreira had five kills and one error in 12 attempts.

Coach Kosty's still feeling out several positions, splitting time at MB, OH and libero this weekend. His two frosh liberos split the last match with Evan Porter having five digs, Kai Schmitt had two diggs.

Home and home against Menlo School this weekend. Stanford is 0-4 in league, hopefully this will mean two wins as Menlo is presently 1-3. Pepperdine leads the MPSF with a 6-0 record, UCLA and USC are 4-0, Grand Canyon and BYU are 3-3, Vanguard is 2-6, Concordia is 1-5 and Stanford is making everyone else look good at 0-4.

That was actually an incredible road win over the #3 ranked team in the country. USC was 19-3 going into the match. 860 fans, nice crowd.

Snoey and Wags had their best matches of the season, 25 kills each, hitting .333 and .465 respectively. Wainright (5 kills) and Carreira (3 kills) each hit .500, Nate Clinton hit .304 with 11 kills. Setter Theo Broiuillette had a career-high 57 assists and 11 digs, and frosh libero Evan Porter had a career-high 17 digs (most by any MPSF player this season). Designated server Ryan DuRoss had an ace and a dig.

USC had far fewer total errors (38 to 49) and led in blocks (6.5 to 12), but Stanford led in everything else; hitting percentage (.360 to .282), kills (73-56), aces (4-2), assists (70-48) and digs (44-33).

Stanford is 10-12 after two losses to BYU, they fell to #13 in the AVCA rankings.

They play again at 5 p.m. at the Galen Center today.
