Chuck is a joke. It’s so painful seeing him screw up a game in person.
WBB: Stanford 63 Washington 59 OT

We just can't score. Jump is cold as ice. Probably gonna lose this one.
Put a glide in your stride and a dip in your hip.
How many shot clock violations for Washington in the game thus far. It’s like they just wan to run the clock regardless and don’t care about getting quality shots. Just keep the game as low scoring as possible. That doesn’t work when you’re behind.
We are also losing the 50/50 hustle plays in the second half. They are getting too many O boards and 2nd chances.

Up by 7 with 2 minutes to play. Looks like we may squeak it out.
7-0 run in 27 seconds for Washington. We couldn’t get the ball inbounded over and over. Why is Brooke taking it out every time. She was clearly rattled by the pressure.
Onto overtime we go with momentum not on our side. Who’s gonna step up and lead this team?

Overtime. Dismaying. After we give up a 7 point lead and away from home, advantage is with Washington.
We're back to a 7 point lead with 2 min to go. Hope we can hold this one.

Ugly win on OT. 63-59.
Brink came through in OT. It just seemed like UW was fated to win this one. Glad we pulled it out.

I think Jump needs more rest in game. She expends so much energy on defense that sometimes her legs aren’t there on her 3 point shot. Harriel can take some of that time or Ogden and Bosgana together.

Well, I hope we did not use up our energy tonight, since we have what may be an even bigger trap to spring on Sunday.
1) This may have been Ogden's coming-out party. At 23 minutes this may have been a high for her. 5/7 shooting including some clutch shots. All year her shot has been a thing of beauty in practice but she has not been able to shoot with confidence in games. Now that she seems fully healthy, she may be coming into her own. Good. We need her.
2) Lepolo with 10 much needed points. 3/10 shooting, but it was such a defensive game. 3 assists to 2 turnovers must be terrible for her--the announcers said she leads the nation in assist/turnover ratio. I think they may have meant she leads the Pac 12.
3) Brink put the team on her back tonight, again. What a great all-around game. It is really scary to imagine where we would be without her. 8/15, with 6 blocks. Subtract her two missed threes and the 5 shots that Daniels blocked and she would have been perfect.
4) I think Jump is playing too many minutes. Tara is leaving her in for her defense, but to get more offensive production from her she should not be playing 45 minutes of a 45 minute game. Yes, she can handle that and defend well, but it seems to take a toll on her offensive focus.
5) We held Washington to 33% shooting. That is similar to the stifling of UCLA last weekend. It has taken this long to get our defensive scheme perfected, but it seems to be peaking at the right time.
6) Iriafen leads +/- by a long ways, despite fouling out and having a sub-par offensive day. She was guarding much smaller guards most of the time when she was in, and this is the result.
7) We held Elle Ladine to 9 points--much better than a year ago. But Washington, which is a mediocre three point shooting team, had 11 treys led by Stines. Without that we would have won in regulation.
8) Hopefully our players will learn how to handle the momentum swings in close games by playing in a few of them. But Tara can't be happy with our offensive performance tonight. And 18 turnovers did not help the cause. We need to practice inbounding a whole bunch.

what on earth were the refs thinking on that last foul? i know it didn't matter cause ogden got a basket, but...
how could they not blow a whistle on the mugging of cam?!?!?
on review how was that not an intentional (aka flagrant)?!?
and washington had 5 fouls and we were on offense. how was that (the foul called on the touch of demetre rather than the mugging of cam) not a shooting foul?!?

I haven’t seen the team in person this year until tonight. I’m reminded why I’ve largely avoided going to games in person in recent years; the officiating is so upsetting to watch in person that it’s hard to find much enjoyment even in a win. It’s so much easier to deal with it at home when you can press pause and go get a beer.
The officiating was farcical. I took my 17 year old who generally watches a lot of NBA and not much college hoops. He pats me on the head at home when I’m watching women’s games and growling at the officiating. At the end of the game, he turned to me and said “I had no idea Chuck was this bad.”
I think we’ve seen Stanford try to navigate this problem before. When the refs don’t call the reaching and the arm fouls when defenders are swiping, we turn the ball over. We also don’t go downhill enough to force the calls to happen when the guards body up and start looking for steals.
In my view, UW made the correct choice to pack the paint and see if we could shoot. They disrupt the smooth Stanford offense by beating you to spots and taking some risks in the passing lanes. Win or lose, playing them is ugly. This could have been one of those games where ‘the nice girls from Stanford’ could have lost. Impressed that they gritted out the win even though it was so so painful to watch.
On a more normal night, Jump would have put this game away in the first half. She looked off in warmups; a lot of shots were short and hitting the rim. I don’t disagree with the comments that she needs more rest.
I thought we were not as prepared as I would have liked for Washington’s high screening action. Before Iriafen got in foul trouble, UW couldn’t figure out what to do when their high screen forced a switch because the rolling player would get picked up inside by either Brink or Iriafen. Once Iriafen had to sit, the high screen set up some 3’s where we didn’t close out well.
I agree that this was Ogden’s best performance so far. The game looks like it has slowed down for her finally, and her decision making was better. Her knuckleball shot is a little scary to watch but it went in tonight.
Brink got pretty pissed off in the second half, but I was quite impressed that she maintained her composure to stay in the game and not get in foul trouble.

In case you didn't notice, no foul was called at OT 0:06.5. The ref blew the whistle to stop the play with Cam down (you can see him raising two hands, not one). So we wound up getting the ball out of bounds rather than going to the foul line, which happened to work in our favor, but could have been disaster.
Why in the world did Brink take a long jumper with 12 seconds on the shot clock with a 5-second differential in OT and a 2 point lead???????
That should have given UW 17 seconds to tie or go ahead. As good as Brink is in so many things, this goes down as a really dumb play.
I couldn't believe the officials didn't call the fouls where Stanford players got bowled over.
Considering Washington's relative weakness compared to Stanford, the minimize-shots-and-score-differential makes sense. We can score 24% moire points that them through 3 quarters, but still be only 8 points ahead. Then a slight difference of luck in shots and ref's calls goes a long way to make that up. Makes the game's result more of a crap (ref) shoot.
I'm going to have to figure out how UW had 10 more shots than Stanford, despite getting 7 fewer rebounds, and having so many shot-clock violations (and losing both jump balls). We did have 4 more TOs. Blocks were about even.
I do agree that Jump's legs seemed tired as her shots were short. Travel? Sleep? Illness? Too much practice/not enough rest? Illness?
(The Sling recording of the live game again had the same technical problem as before. A bit over an hour into it, no matter what the time indicator says on the recording, if you play it after that, it begins playing from the very beginning (while it still shows, say, that you are an hour and 20 minutes into the game). The subsequent "shows" that were on the schedule didn't result in recordings, even though scheduled to record. So I had to wait for the midnight replay.)

thanks for the explanation of no foul call. ok, then riddle me this: why did we get the ball out of bounds under the basket (not that i minded)? as i recall, brooke had the ball on the sideline with several defenders trying to steal or foul, and just before, cam was clobbered in the head near half-court.
3 of washington's 3's were gifts: 2 unintentional bank shots, and one where - yes! - dalayah daniels bowled over a well-positioned brooke in the paint (but outside the restricted area) while passing out for the 3 - no call.

Looked like a really strong Stanford fan contingent at the game? I saw lots of Cardinal behind the team bench and behind the basket. I bet Brink brought some family from nearby Beaverton to town.

Refs follow specific rules as to where the ball is inbounded (sideline or under the basket). It's based on where the foul is committed. I'm pretty sure they use an imaginary line that runs from the elbows to the corners. if a foul is committed inside that trapezoid (below the free throw line), then the inbound position is under the basket. Otherwise, it's on the sideline.
If that same game was re-played, reffed the exact same way, and each team took the same shots, we typically win by a wide margin. As others have mentioned, Hannah was really off. Many of her 3 point attemps were wide open. There's 6-12 points right there. They also banked in 2 threes and Daniels hit one from the right wing that somehow went in even though the height of the shot was never above the rim :> Everything went right for them and nothing really went right for us. But we had Cam and they didn't.
Kiki committed some dumb fouls. All but one of them were obvious. It's the same story, we need Kiki and Cam to stay on the court - we were +22 with Kiki on the court. Our guards just aren't consistent enough shooters. If they have an off night, we can be beaten by teams like UW.
Kudos to Courtney Ogden. Those 11 points were big. As 81 has mentioned, she could be a big difference maker down the stretch now that she's healthy.
