Was hoping for some more insight into one of the worst band performances I've ever seen. For those who weren't there, the LSJUMB played a usual set of songs, with their only formation being the word DUCK, scatter, DUCK, scatter, repeat about 10 times, then finally ending with MOOSE, all without any script or PA announcer at all.
It got a smile from me to see and hear the consternation from the surrounding USC fans, though I honestly couldn't provide them any insight into the performance except that it was probably a joke only the band was in on.
When I talked with some band members after the game I heard the script wasn't approved....anybody know more? Was looking forward to it, as the USC halftime performances are almost always stellar.

I've heard the USC administration is not too fond of the band because of the performance in 2009.
Personally, I think if they ban our band from getting up to its antics, we should ban their band entirely. And Traveler.

USC disallowed the band from using the stadium PA system unless they were given full censorship over the script, due to their unhappiness with the band's show about USC alum Joe Francis (of Girls Gone Wild fame) at the 2009 game. From what I've heard, the band submitted several attempts at a script, and all were rejected.
Personally, I thnk they should've pantomimed the entire halftime.
There's always a tension when it comes to dealing with Arthur Bartner and his merry band of highly paid players. On the one hand, you want to be better than they are, and not try to engage in a tit-for-tat with such a martinet. On the other, occasionally indulging that desire would be soooo fun. As at the game last year, where the Athletic Department, at least initially, was not going to allow the Toejam band into the stadium, because on their previous trip they had completely ignored the field staff's instructions and been their normal unpleasant selves to AD employees. I've heard it took a call from SC's president directly to President Hennessy begging to let them in (to maintain their streak of having a band at every football game for some large number of years) for that decision to be reversed.

Thanks for the details Viking Guy. I heard the 2009 performance was hilarious! I wish I had known ahead of time that the band's script was rejected by $C's administration....that's pathetic. At least I could have told the sc fans around me that this was a protest performance. We should ban Bartner's Buffoons next year.  The level of self importance is ridiculous. It's a half time show and it may as well be entertaining. I would rather enjoy witty satire and good music than goose-stepping repetition any day. "We can't beat you on our field, but we can stifle your band, so there!" Hey Arthur, "What's your deal?!"Â

They probably did work "What's your deal" into this year's script...and it was probably summarily rejected :p

I have been subjected to the Toejam band halftime shows for 30 years and each time they perform the exact same parody of the LSJUMB. It's really trite. Perhaps the USC administration is trying to stifle the creativity and imagination of the LSJUMB and the SMUT because their band is so boring and devoid of new ideas.
