Thanks for posting.  There's a temptation to say, "It's 2021, not 1981.  We're past the time when gay people have to remain in the closet."  That should be true, but sadly, it's not.  As one of my friends recently said, "We need Pride Month because there are still gay teens out there who think it's better to be dead than gay."  Now we have an example of one of the most "manly" people in the world -- a successful defensive lineman in the prime of an NFL career -- who's existence proves that you don't need to be straight to be a real man.  Some of us -- probably most of us -- already know that, but this revelation is important to some people out there.

Based on statistics, it seems there should be somewhere between 15-20 gay men in the NFL. But it might be more because we don't know if gay men have a higher proclivity to play sports and football in particular, than non-gay men. I doubt the percentage of gay athletes is lower than the general population.

When my son was in high school 20 years ago, I was talking to another x-country team mom about how nice it was that there was a single team for both the girls and the boys, with different events of course. She made the comment that when she talked to her son about it, his attitude was “no big whoop.” I said, but that’s why it IS a big whoop, that these kids don’t see it as one. I hope there will be a day soon when a gay NFL player is “no big whoop.” Amid all the craziness, there is some progress.
