Anderson hasn’t forgotten how to coach. There was a time when he was hailed as an excellent DC, and the fear is he’d leave for an HC job. He never blitzed a ton. But would pick his spots well. The difference is - he used to have talent. Particularly in the front seven. So he could stop the run and pressure the QB with a 4 man rush. The DBs kept the play in front of them and seldom got beat deep. And those teams tackled extremely well. It was damn tough to sustain drives versus those defenses.
But he doesn't have the horses up front anymore. And the talent in the backfield is a couple notches down. So he simply can’t play straight up. He is going to have to take more chances. Blitz a whole lot more. Stunt. Play a lot of games up front. Otherwise they will continue to have problems getting off the field.
Stanford’s defense is not physical. And I
t’s slow. That is not a good combo. So, take risks. You have no other choice.
I for one never thought Lance Anderson was anything more than a mediocre DC. You know who was good? Vic Fangio. Derek Mason and Jason Tarver. Lane Anderson was good when all he did was coach OLBs. The defense has been getting worse and leveling off since he took over. And the OLBs have really regressed after he became DC.
Anderson should have been replaced three years ago. This isn't any revisionist history from me.

Anderson had several years as DC with top tier defenses.
