This is an interesting figure:

Basically, it looks at total case counts through August 1 compared to current case counts. There is a much stronger correlation than I might have expected, but it does make sense from an epidemiological perspective. Since infections beget infections, the best predictor of having a high case count is having had a high case count in the past.
It also kind of puts to rest the idea that we are anywhere herd immunity, as that would show up as an inverse correlation between previous case counts (which confer immunity) and current counts, since infections are hard to take hold in previously infected patients.
