Should Stanford dip into endowment to pay workers?

YES. If they don’t, I will be pissed.
However, although I expect Stanford to dip into its endowment this year, it should be measured to be able to allocate money to many places. It should pay employees as best it can. It should help the community (look at what the UW Virology Lab is doing — wow!) It should invest in treatments, a cure and other helpful research. So, if the campus is closed for 8 months or 20 months or even 33 months, I don’t know that the university can commit to pay every employee 100% indefinitely, but absolutely it should dip into its endowment to help its employees. I would hope they can pay everyone through the end of the academic year, at least.

Stanford had $26 billion as of 2019. While that has definitely gone down as of late, it still has more than enough to pay their workers. Are they holding onto the money as they wait for government support? Or are they just trying to spend as little from the endowment as possible so they can keep trying to catch up to Harvard for the biggest endowment? I think morally/ethically the right thing to do is to spend the money. But in the long run, the good will that would come of doing the right thing will also be worth it.
