This is an incredibly tense time.  As a nation, and individually, we are sitting here afraid of a pandemic that we seem to have no control over, which is putting a brobdingnagian collective and individual financial strain on us, and which will threaten our lives and the lives of those we know. I know for myself, I keep checking for some sign that the trajectory is bending and things are starting to come under control and I keep not seeing it. Not knowing how long, or how deep, or how severe this will become is, for me, the toughest thing.  And I imagine other people on this board are like me.  I wish I were a better wordsmith so I could reassure everyone that we will fight through it and make it through to the post-coronavirus period.  And the intellectual part of me knows that even if the worst comes to pass, we will make it to the other side.  Anyways, I hope all of you, including the many I have met in person and the many I haven't, are doing ok.  Stay healthy all.

I check the daily statistics on NBC Bay Area. It was beginning to look as though the slope was lessening, but today, the number of confirmed cases in Santa Clara jumped from 196 to 263, and two more deaths were reported.

Yeah, I monitor similar stats and also got my hopes up, before seeing today’s crush.

I have to ***hope*** it merely reflects more testing capacity. I imagine there is a massive backlog of people with symptoms who have not been able to be tested. 

My worry is, if don’t have the capacity to test probable cases soon, how long will this have to go on? How many times will have to do this?

Let’s get some perspective here.

Worrying about acquiring the virus is far worse than the poor people who have it and are gasping for air. But here’s the thing, even if you do get it, the odds are you will be able to handle it if you are otherwise healthy. If you are stressed about job and income, Congress appears to understand the scale of action necessary.

As for numbers, keep in mind just hold your breath for about a week. Don’t judge or make any emotional conclusions about anything. Pretend your team has the ball inside it’s own 5 yard line, and you just want to get room for a decent punt. On April 1 it should be safe to assess whether our isolation efforts have started flattening the curve. You’ll unnecessarily stress yourself which weakens your immune system if you “live and die” with every day’s case and death reporting.

If you can handle the news in a matter of fact kind of way, sure, follow it. But if it worries you, or you need to see evidence we are getting control of this to avoid more stress, don’t follow it every day.

Identified cases will rise a lot over the next 20 days because of the rise in testing and because even suspected cases would be a lagging indicator by ~7-15 days.  Deaths lag by 15-20 days at least.   There are a number of rather easy to understand Youtube videos on these concepts, including a Khan Academy one I shared with my family.

We don't have access to a good proxy for actual cases.  Identified cases will increase as tests become available.  Deaths, in the stay at home states, will probably not flatten until early April even if they are effective.  

Hopefully our shared sacrifice will make a difference. 

Ultimately those with healthy immune systems and those in good health will do better fighting the virus.   Getting the body in fighting shape is critical.  If tracking the trend lines motivates you to improve your health for the impending battle then watch the trends.   If the trends create great stress and anxiety then indulge in other activities to strengthen your body and mind.

We're doing OK, right now I'm far more worried about the insouciance with which much of Oakland (and, second-hand, other parts of the bay) seems to be approaching this. I feel like we're going to be in for a very rude awakening very soon.

Right now I'm hoping that I can manage to test/pack/ship a whole bunch of inventory tomorrow and a few other things ship over this next week, because I don't think the current state of affairs will last into April. Restrictions are going to increase at some point.
