Yeah, Harris was beyond awful.  Beyond the fact that he didn't win, he treated his players like crap, and never met a bus he didn't throw one of them under.

Two important things that Harbaugh had going for him: 1) he won, and winning papers over a lot of things and 2) he was frequently a participant in the drills.  Kind of hard to call your coach a bully for making you run up and down a hill when he's right there with you.  Neither of those protect against a hyperthermia or dehydration among players, however.

One difference between Harbaugh/Stanford and Durkin/Maryland: Harbaugh brought Shannon Turley to Stanford, while Durkin brought Rick Court to Maryland. 

So far as I can tell, Turley seems to be tough and demanding, but also admired and respected by the players. Court seems to be an out-of-control bully.

In a memo to Loh in May 2017, then-athletic director Kevin Anderson outlined changes he wanted to make to the school's health care of athletes, the Post reported. Among the stipulations was that athletic trainers should report to the University of Maryland Medical School, housed at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, rather than be employed by this university.

Outside physicians currently supervise the university's athletic training staff, but those trainers are employed by the athletic department. While the NCAA doesn't regulate this organizational structure, it does suggest schools maintain autonomy between the athletic department and medical personnel, which the proposed changes would have established.
Loh rejected the proposal because he wanted the school to still be able to make medical personnel decisions, according to the Post.

A friend with direct knowledge of the operations of UK (as in Kentucky) said that the rejected proposal is how it works there. You'd think it would be standard...

Wow, what a garbage result - and lost in the headlines is that they're forcing the President of the university out next year too. He previously had no plans to step down next year and that is a much shorter time horizon than is normal for someone who's only been President for a few years.

With this move, I've really lost all respect for the regents of that institution, and by extension, Maryland itself. How desperate are they for football money? To the point of looking the other way while the coaches let their players literally die on the field? Yeesh.

Very gratifying to see. Apparently the student government threatened to drastically curtail the $400 in student fees per semester that go toward the AD.

Durkin needs to be the first of many to go. Bravo to the players who walked out when he walked in.

AD needs to go. Every coach who was on the field that day needs to go. I know that would devastate the football team, but seriously is that more important than the life of a player? The players who walked out don't seem to think so.

Sounds like after enduring half a day of bad press, and not hiding his disapproval of the Regents' push to retain Durkin, President Wallace Loh said "screw it" and fired him. 

We'll see how mad the Regents get at him, since they apparently threatened his job over this anyway, leading Loh to say (1) he wouldn't stand in the way of the Regents' recommendation to keep Durkin, but (2) he'd retire at the end of the school year anyway. So, whatever leverage the Regents had over Loh is vastly diminished now. And weirdly, the Regents ceded the high ground to Loh yesterday anyway, noting that Loh didn't want Durkin to be retained and it was the Regents pushing that. So, when the reaction to keeping Durkin was as (oh-so-predictably) bad as it was, reports are that Loh--relieved of his need to defer to the Regents by his retirement announcement, and seemingly the only person in leadership at Maryland who didn't look completely awful in this debacle--acted unilaterally to fire him. 

The Regents seem to be without any good options, from their perspective at least--I think most of us would agree that it's a good thing they seem to have gotten played here. They (1) wanted to keep Durkin, but also presumably (2) don't want Maryland's name dragged through the mud.
