That's why Falk went 34 of 48 for 337 with 3 tds and 1 int., while Costello went 9 of 20 for 105 and no tds and 1 pick. The weather was much worse when we had the ball. At least their QBRs were about the same.

I've played football in terrible conditions.  It's a different game, and the team that practices in those conditions and has familiarity with those conditions has a leg up on their opponents.  To say otherwise makes no sense.

Falk is a senior, and played high school football in Logan UT.  He's played in miserable weather for eight years.  Costello grew up in Southern California and plays for Stanford.  Falk's experience in bad weather far outdistances that of Costello, who's essentially had none.  I don't think I would dismiss Falk's experience as a factor in a freezing, snowy game.

Memo to the scouts and coaches. Never recruit a kid from the Sun Belt. On the rare occasion we play in the snow (apparently, it's been 80 years), we have to have kids with experience playing in inclement weather. As for hot and humid, thank heavens some prof from Florida marketed gatorade to level that playing field.

I think Shaw has always been a little reluctant to run his QB's that much out of fear of injury. Chryst getting hurt during the Sun Bowl probably reinforced that.
Of course, it you are a Shawtagonist, you see that as one more example of him being over cautious and too conservative in his approach to offense.

Well, I would say Shaw views the QB run game as the spice rather than the main dish -- and only wants his QBs running if the passing game isn't working. He was perfectly content to let Hogan scramble around in 2012 when the passing game was limited and (presumably) Hogan's grasp of the offense was weaker. Then, of course, Hogan ran less as his career progressed, with certain exceptions (e.g. Oregon 2013 and WSU 2015) when the matchup is right. Other than that, Shaw's practice seems to be to delegate QB runs to backups (Dallas Lloyd, Ryan Burns) and use it as occasional emphases for specific opponents (Utah this year, when both Chryst and Costello were pretty eager to run). So it's a situational thing. The problem is, one of those situations was Saturday, and it didn't happen. If you have a designated QB runner and the full-time QB won't run, it makes shotgun runs pretty easy to defend. To cite Chip Kelly, the guru himself (via Chris Brown of Smart Football fame):

Kelly once said that the shotgun inside zone “is not a great play if the quarterback hands off to the running back and everyone in the stadium knows who has the ball.” He was right, and his NFL offense is now proof.
