Noted the prior thread Re impact of the wildfires. God speed to all those significantly impacted.

On a less urgent note, air quality/AQI in Palo Alto is current in the "unhealthy" range and near term prospects are equally dim.

Universities in the NW recently dealt with a similar problem and were at the stage of looking for alternate sites for football games before timely rains interceded. Any news forthcoming Re our game for this weekend?

First, this is such a tragedy. I finally heard back from a friend today who lives in Sonoma who said she is alright, which was such a relief.

There is a website I have been visiting to monitor air quality. I think it's:
https://airnow.gov/index.cfm?action=airn...cityid=318
But can't confirm now because the website is unresponsive, presumably due to server load.

Today is particularly bad. In my weather app, today's forecast for Menlo Park is "Smoke," which I have never seen before. The air is much worse in the N Bay and SF, as you'd expect. The Stanford area tends to switch between Yellow (don't exercise if you have asthma) and Orange but I've never seen the area go to Red, Fuschia, or Blood Red.

I would guess if things are "Yellow" on Saturday, they still play the game.  All the games in LA will give experience for playing in smog.

No rain is forecast.

It depends on what happens with wind patterns, but I have not seen the Stanford area go past Orange (and it's often Yellow), and and I have not seen a pattern that things are definitively getting worse or better. Today is the worst day down South, but the second worst day was Monday. Tuesday was actually a little better where I live.

But I'd have to imagine the game will proceed at Stanford if it's at all possible. I can't imagine them moving it for Homecoming. Plus, if the air quality really did get much worse, what would happen to Homecoming?

On the plane tomorrow flying out for the game...well, there is the minor deal of a 45th class reunion but if the reunion were held on the left and the game was on the right...I'd turn right.  Had no idea or even thought about the air quality would be crappy, maybe even objectively bad to be breathing.  Grew up in SoCal, fires and watching those new-fangled water bombers were regular entertainment events.  Then I grew up.  I live in a mountain-top neighborhood in a pretty forest-y forest.  Luckily a pretty moist, humid environment in the Southeast.  Still, if a fire got up into the tree canopy with a wind blowing...  Watching the coverage yesterday made us stop and wonder.  A friend has a house and ranch near Sonoma.  As of this morning we haven't heard from him, not for lack of trying on our end.

Ugh I spoke to soon. Stanford is now red.

Hope the forecast holds (better this weekend), but I think it's up to wind patterns.

In Los Altos (bordering PA to the south), it is seriously smokey out.  You can see and smell it like nothing I can ever remember (living here 50+ years).  Was wondering if the team would practice in this?

Howard Wolf, the president of the Stanford Alumni Assoc, just sent this message to reunion registrants:

Dear Alum,

We are eagerly awaiting your return to Stanford for Reunion Homecoming 2017.

As you get ready to travel to the Farm, please be aware that the wildfires north of San Francisco have created smoky conditions on the Peninsula and here on campus. For those of you who are very sensitive to reduced air quality, please prepare accordingly to ensure your comfort during the weekend.

All reunion activities are still scheduled as planned.

It's bad. But not as bad as those days when it was 110 with bad air.  Stanford did not play at home that Sat.

I looked at Washingtons schedule. They are at ASU. I would be looking at moving the game to Husky Stadium. Logistically, if at all possible, they'd have to decide tonight.

I think there is a decent chance the game doesn't get played. Does playing at night help air quality wise?

Good point: a sensitive cohort due to the semi continuous running. Resting respiration around 8 liters/min, while strenuous exercise can be up in the 120L/min range; over a 10 fold increase in exposure. In September Oregon cancelled their season opening cross country invitational meet that was scheduled a few days prior to the football game (and, alas, rains). UO bused team to OR coast or practiced indoors during worst days.

As others have noted: winds will be key. Fingers crossed. Offerings to appropriate deities not discouraged...within reason.

So far, 80 flights canceled at SFO due to the smoke. Conditions are supposed to worsen overnight.

Mrs. Mick had a doctor's appointment in SF today.  She said the air quality was particularly bad.

SF was a breath of fresh air today. Was on a Bart platform in the East Bay today, and it was awful. 7 minutes on a platform and I ended up with a sore throat.

I dont see air quality being severely impacted enough that they wouldn't hold the game. I hope they have a some kind of food/clothing drive or fundraising activity for fire relief. It's unbelievably bad.

My wife's entire family lives in Napa. They haven't had to evacuate but a lot of their friends have lost homes.

If the air quality worsens tomorrow, I cannot see putting on sporting events. The fine particulate matter in the air will go deep into the players lungs and can even get into the blood. It will slow them down long after the game. Why risk the players' health?

In the East Bay, we have been dealing with air worse than I have seen in 30 years here. EPA doesn't publish an AQI number for our town. Judging from numbers for adjoining towns, I figure we reached about 205 today (based on 186 to the west and 225 to the east. In the middle of the day, it was overcast with only hints of sun peaking through. I don't think any of that was clouds. Tomorrow is expected to be slightly worse.  In this stuff, I get nauseous  just puttering around in the back yard. It's not because I'm in such horrible shape. On most days I walk 5-7 miles. Not today.

I live in Palo Alto and we just received a mass emergency phone call from the county to take measures to deal with the smoke.  It directed us to a website which recommends staying indoors, setting ventilation to recirculate, etc.  My eyes are watering, I have intermittent coughing, and I feel slightly nauseous.  Maybe I am coming down with a cold!  Seriously, at work today in a large, sealed, air conditioned building I had none of these symptoms.

Coming home it felt like it was overcast even though there wasn't a cloud in sight.  However, the air can clear in the space of an hour or two if the wind direction shifts.  Right now we are getting the direct plume coming south from the north bay fires.  Yesterday when the breeze shifted to take it out to sea, the air cleared rapidly.  I think it very hard to say from hour to hour let alone day to day what the conditions will be like.  Anyone running or exercising outdoors this afternoon in Palo Alto would have been a fool.

I have to think that the powers that be are seriously considering postponing the game.
