Hi all, Ute fan here with a few suggestions on things to do, places to eat and how to get around Salt Lake City if you havent been here before. For those of you that have been here, there are some new ways of getting around.
Getting to downtown from the airport is considerably easier now than it was back in 2013 as the Green Line light rail line is now open from the airport to downtown. Its easy to catch just south of terminal one and takes about 15 minutes to get into downtown.
Dont bother with airport hotels. Theyre too far out of downtown to justify what youll save. Downtown I would recommend the Monaco. Grand America is the high end, the Peery is a cool old hotel. Hilton, Marriott, etc., are downtown also
To get to the game use UTAs Trax light rail line. Parking lots are virtually all reserved on gameday. Street parking in the neighborhoods is a hassle and a hike. Catch the Red Line University train at Courthouse station which is between 4th and 5th South. Its walkable from most downtown hotels or just hop on a Draper or West Valley train to Courthouse. Additionally, on gameday your game ticket is your UTA fare on Trax, FrontRunner heavy rail and all buses. Its a great way to sightsee for free if you want.
Ive found myself a little long in the tooth for the bar scene anymore but some of my favorites are Gracie's, The Green Pig as well as the craft cocktail Bar-X and its neighbor Beer Bar. Lumpy's is the flagship Ute bar and is amenable to all visiting fans. If you're wearing your school gear don't be surprised if you get at least one drink bought for you. If you're a dueling pianos kind of person Keys on Main is a fun destination.
Restaurants run the range from taco carts to five-star dining at the Grand America. Some personal favorites are Market Street/Oyster Bar, Bambara and Valters Oesteria. If you go there youll understand why I tell people you dont meet Valter, you experience Valter. Mexican fan that loves moles? Head for the Red Iguana or Red Iguana 2, both of which are easily accessible on the Trax green line. I still love the fare at the Tin Angel and at Tony Caputo's Market and Deli but if you go to either one consider using a car service. Unfortunately, the homeless population in that neighborhood has exploded as have crime rates.
It's hard to say that there's anything that you'd consider "must-do" in Salt Lake City. Whether you're LDS or not Temple Square is an interesting tour. The state capital is a short (and free) bus ride up Capitol Hill. The Gateway is on the west side of downtown and City Creek Center on the east if you're into shopping. If you have some extra time make a run to Park City. Its about a half hour drive or you can ride the PC/SLC connect. The food in PC is good, and the bars are fun. No Name Saloon is a favorite. Also, Oktoberfest is in full swing at Snowbird resort and yes, there is beer. Lots & lots of beer.
Most alumni tailgates are held on the west side of Guardsman Way by the new football facility. Hopefully you'll have an opportunity to stop by the Guardsman tailgate lot directly east and have some pregame fun with us. If you have your own food to cook you'll no doubt find many camps that will let you use their grill.
Most any of the Ute fans you'll find posting here will be happy to make suggestions, offer any help or answer any questions you may have about your trip. Here's hoping it's a good one and above all a safe one however you travel to SLC! Please send me a message if you have any questions about your visit to Salt Lake City, tailgating or anything else.
