Old Chem Lives Again

Renovated after 30 years' closure, it will anchor undergraduate science.

After a $66.7 million renovation, the building will reopen in January 2017 as the Science Teaching & Learning Center, a multidisciplinary hub for undergraduate science students, and an anchor to the forthcoming Biology and Chemistry Quad.

Wow, that seemed...quick...for a renovation!  Can't wait to see the building restored :)

Yup, I was just on campus today.  I'd say it was as gorgeous as ever, except the place gets more beautiful every time.  I am especially psyched for the old chem building.  For one I was a chem major.  But I was at Stanford after the earthquake when the building was condemned.  It has been in a bit of purgatory since then: a historical landmark that couldn't be demolished, too structurally unsound to be occupied, and too contaminated to be renovated at a reasonable cost.  Nice to see they finally came up with the money and will make it into an undergraduate focused building.

Oh, wow! I was afraid they were tearing it down!

I remember taking classes in there.

A half-century later, the new building apparently still suffered from the compound’s olfactory unpleasantness, albeit with less risk to passersby. “[T]here was usually a little whiff of rotten-egg gas,” recalls Anadel Smith Law, ’47. “Every place has its aroma. It permeated everything.”

That place *definitely* had it's distinctive smell. I can still smell it!!
