The Kansas Jayhawks visited in 1967 for Stanford’s home opener, a nail-biting 21-20 victory by the Indians. Captain Jack Root rushed for all three touchdowns. Legendary Cardinal baseball coach Mark Marquess was Stanford’s quarterback.

I believe Pepper Rodgers was the Kansas coach at that time. They were a lot better back then...going to the Orange Bowl in '68, I think, behind Bobby Douglass.[/color][/size]

I think Root and John Read traded positions somewhere along the way. LB/FB and vice versa. Douglass was the Kansas QB. And Plunkett was on the Stanford bench redshirting.

The box score has team stats only and shows that Stanford completed 5 of 12 passes, so another QB must have played for Stanford as well. The article describes Jack Root's three TD runs, including one on which he "literally flew into paydirt." Literally flying is an impressive skill!

You're right that I was only two years old at the time so it was not an eyewitness account, but I am a fan of Stanford sports history besides my personal experiences as a student and alum. Mitt Romney was the roommate, don't think he saw action vs Kansas that day.
