Hooper, he gone

Bummer, I wonder what happened to change his mind. Thank goodness we have a strong TE pipeline, but Cotton probably would have been a big contributor. I'm guessing Kaden Smith will not be redshirting.

Good luck to him. I hope he winds up in a good situation.
We are still going to have trouble getting all the TE talent on the field next year.

I wish him the best, I hope he hits third round or better. Candidly, I don't think he will, but I really hope he does. In any event, we have some very strong tight ends on the current roster.
Good luck, Austin!

Ah, shoot. Knew that was a risk, but I wasn't expecting him to get a 1st or 2nd round prediction from the draftniks. But that's just me being selfish and wanting a good player back for another year.Â

Was hoping he would come back (and think it may have been a good idea), but I hope he crushes it as a rookie!
Wonder if there's any chance Cotton moves back to TE. Maybe he plays both ways...

That's pretty surprising, although I was wondering why we never heard anything from Cooper himself. Best of luck to him. I truly hope he continues Stanford's legacy of successful NFL tight ends.
Please clear the field! The game is not over!

Here's an article on Ben Snyder who is the other tight end listed on the roster after Schultz and Taboada. He's from the Lake Tahoe area and the article is from a local paper.

I wonder if he changed his mind, or if Fitzgerald was making things up ... or misheard something.
Here was the article claiming that after the Rose Bowl Hooper said he was coming back.

I thought we heard that Smith had a double ACL/MCL tear needing surgery. That wouldn't seem to indicate playing next year.
For the most part this year, only two TEs saw the field for Stanford in competitive situations, so not clear that three are critical. On the other hand, Taboada never lined up in-line as the TE-Y as far as I can remember, so he'll have to show he can block the big boys.
Hooper leaving might preclude the the thought some had of Taboada as essentially a replacement for Cajuste (not entirely in the realm of fantasy as when he did see the field Taboada lined up split out in the kind of positions Cajuste usually occupied - and from TV distance they seemed to have similar body types ... and numbers).

Leaving aside whether the decision is good for Hooper (which we can't really know), this seems bad for Stanford football. Most importantly, Stanford is losing a very talented player early in his career, and this is not an isolated occurrence. Two last year, one this year (so far), and likely at least one (McCaffrey) next year. One of Stanford's traditional advantages is that its players want to stay 4 years to get the degree, but that advantage is decreasing. Also, the program has developed a good relationship with the admissions office, but I think a good part of that is due to the team's high graduation rate, which seems likely to decline in the coming years. The last time we saw a rash of early departures (Teyo, Kwame, Jacobsen and Borchardt), Stanford football and basketball simultaneously started a long decline. I hope that Stanford is able to avoid a repeat of that unfortunate history.

Leaving early doesn't rule out graduating on time. Do we know what the recent early departures from last year did with that? I find it hard to believe someone would choose to come to Stanford for football and then willingly not graduate.

This is the natural result of successfully recruiting the most elite athletes. It's an indication that we now have a powerhouse program. We should be happy that we get these guys for 3 years unlike in college basketball, which one and done has made into a joke (players that aren't even there long enough to get academically disqualified). I bet most of our guys will come back and finish their degrees.
Should we go back and get less elite athletes so we can have them for 4-5 years? That's not a recipe for success. I'd rather have CMac for 3 years than a mediocre player for 4-5 years.

Some guys who leave after three years eventually come back and graduate -- Kwame Harris, Curtis Borchardt, Joe Borchard, Chad Hutchinson, Bob Whitfield. But it takes a real effort to make it happen.

Hooper has never suffered a significant injury to my knowledge, and he's rated Top 3 at his position. The NFL drafts on potential, and Hooper is a big and physical guy. It makes sense for him to leave now. Notice David Shaw didn't come out and rip Hooper publicly for giving up two years of eligibility, like Mora did Myles Jack.
Stanford already has the #2 H.S. TE prospect in 2017 committed, in addition to the #2 in 2016. And I believe Schultz was the #3 TE in 2014. So it's not like Stanford is hurting for TEs. And frankly, Hooper leaving early will only help with recruiting the position if anything.

It is quite a TE pipeline to the NFL these days. Of the recent vintage, who have we had drafted or picked up by teams?
Alex Smith (though pre-Harbaugh)
Jim Dray
Levine Toilolo
Coby Fleener
Zach Ertz
Konrad Reuland
Anyone else? Ryan Hewitt is a FB or a TE?
So Hooper would be the 8th in the past 10 years?

I don't think he'd leave unless his draft eval came back top 2 rounds and/or #1 TE in draft.

Hooper as a lot of upside and could possibly be the next Gronkowski minus all of the injuries. I hope get drafted no later than 2nd round. I am excited to see him play in the next level.Â
For selfish reason, I wish he was staying for another year at Stanford though. Stanford is definitely losing a lot of offensive players.

It sucks, but I suppose players leaving early is an inevitable product of success on the football field.
Also, it is of course Hooper's life, not any of ours.
