In practice, it is somewhat difficult to get rid of people anywhere,

I couldn't disagree more strongly. People get fired all the time from Walmart and 7-11 and the insurance company where my sister works and every single newspaper where I have ever worked. Whatever the merits of tenure, it is not a common arrangement at private workplaces in the United States.

Walmart has 2,800 NLRB/EEOC actions (or the state equivalent) annually.  I'm guessing they don't shy away from firing employees much.
