I'm a second=generation Raider fan. I'm an Oakland taxpayer. I really want the Raiders to stay, but I don't want Oakland to provide more than land and limited infrastructure for a football stadium project. I would love to see a new football stadium on the site of O.Co, and a baseball park near Jack London Square; in fact, I'd be okay with limited public money for the latter.

The bay area is the nations' sixth largest media market, and has the highest per-household income of any metro area in the country. It would seem foolish to leave that market for Portland or San Antonio.

You don't need to be concerned about a pro franchise moving to Portland.  That would require the city to spend money on something besides bicycle paths and light rail.

Hmmmhhh .... Have you WATCHED an Oregon Duck game? 

They may not have the big corporate backers (other than Nike) that seem to foot a lot of the NFL bills but the line of cars driving from Portland to Eugene on Duck game day assures me that Portland isn't above football.

Now the city council won't be excited about funding plans and I can certainly see green special interest groups thumbing their noses at the environmental impact of an NFL game day.

The politics of stadium building and public money involved...I can imagine groups protesting the use of public money for American football in Portland.

But it could work, I suppose.  Surely there are bigger fish (cities) to fry (make money off of)?

Both Oregon and Oregon State get the majority of their fans from Portland.  On game day there's a steady stream of cars headed southbound on I-5 flying either Ducks or Beavers flags.  On the rare Saturday when both teams are at home the traffic is sometimes a problem if kickoff times are similar.

There are enough football fans in Portland to make a pro team a go.  Fifteen years ago the 49ers dominated Oregon, in the last few years it's flipped to the Seahawks.  The problem is the city and state governments will never pony up for public funding for a stadium (not necessarily a bad thing IMHO as an Oregon taxpayer).  The Timbers play in Providence Park and while it's OK and kind of endearing in a remodeled-Fenway-Park-kind-of-way, it only seats 18,000 for soccer.

Moda Center, home to the Trailblazers, was financed partly by Paul Allen and the city of Portland put up a small amount of money.  Given the going rate for an NFL stadium is north of $1B, it's safe to say it's not happening in Portland without some kind of really creative financing arrangement.

Keep Portland weird.
