Defense survives the last go-ahead drive from a very capable Utah offense. They've got some injuries, but they have a heck of a RB.
That very capable Utah offense is worse than Stanford's in yds/gm, yds/play, points/drive, and is virtually tied in rushing yds/carry (4.18 vs 4.19).

The last time I had numbers thrown at me was to contend that ASU's defense was worse than WSU's defense. The Utes put up +11 pts on Oregon compared to Stanford.

By all means, rely on single games you happened to notice over season long statistics.
But there is a point in the numbers you chose. Stanford's offensive problems are primarily centered on scoring rather than moving the ball, so being +points on Stanford is not overly surprising. And Utah is fairly good at turning yds into points. Stanford used to be good at that.
ASU is an interesting case. Their defense was not good early on.
They started conference play giving up 545 yds to Colorado, 580 yds to UCLA, and 493 yds to U.-S.-C.. Then they turned things around giving up 288 yds to us, 290 to UW, and 241 to Utah. Certainly the caliber of offenses they faced changed, but that is pretty dramatic. We can be proud we turned their season around.
und actually moved the ball pretty well on Sparty, getting 487 yds but they turned it over 5 times so they didn't have a chance.

It's more that I choose to contextualize my statistics rather than rely on past performance being an indicator of future performance. Utah has no problem scoring, and Stanford does. Scoring is indeed important in the game of football, and this worries me for the remainder of the schedule. Regarding ASU, I guess I saw their football performance prior to the Stanford game and judged it more capable than the WSU defense. The eye test isn't everything, but it's something.
