In the department of "how do you mess up the coin toss?" it is worth noting that UCLA gets to receive the kickoff in both halves.  UCLA, having won the toss and elected to defer, was given the first half kickoff too when Texas chose to kick rather than receive.

I pulled this stunt when I was a captain of our CYO flag football team in fourth grade.

It was my last turn as captain.  (I thought it was all some elaborate historical ceremony and no matter what happened, whoever kicked off in the first half got to receive in the second.)
