Or whatever it is that Johnny Dawkins is running these days.  Madsen surely has enough sense of self to know that a chance to coach at Stanford isn't the only path in life.  And even if he'd LOVE to coach at Stanford,  his chances of being promoted if Dawkins is let go are slim to none.  Mostly none.  So he sets off for other opportunities to prove himself.  At very least the scent of success or failure will be his own,  not somebody else's.
