I've heard that Gore is personable and even funny in small private settings.  He only turns into a robot stiffer than C-3PO in large groups.

I found the same to be true of George Shultz. I took a short seminar from him in the spring of 1975 and he was absolutely delightful. (The session where William Safire - who was visiting the Shultzes at the time - came with him to class was wonderful.) But when he gave a speech, it was a real snoozefest. Not robotic, necessarily, but I can't think of a better term.
