One point to remember regarding the timing of Monty's departure: It was the height (or the low point) of the Mamlet years. She was severely hampering the recruiting fronts of many of the sports programs.  I did not have an issue with him leaving for the Warriors. I was sad to see him go, but I wished him luck and understood his decision to try the NBA.Â
I completely disagreed with his move to UCB. Would John Wooden have gone to USC? No! He could have picked any other program in the country. He then became Benedict Monty to me. I also believe he was trying to work an angle with the AD on his role there before he departed. I don't know all the details, but something was questioned around comp, I believe. He tainted his Stanford ties with the move across the Bay. Yes, I thank him for what he did for our program, but going to our rival was a poor decision.
