What I'm most concerned about - will the referees call the game like the first (FSU v ISU), where it seemed anything short of a two-point fall was not a foul in the lane, or like in the U.SC - St. John's game, where there were somewhere north of 60 fouls called? Given that Florida State beat us a few years back by essentially beating up our entire team, I'm concerned. As you say, especially if Mikaela is unable to go, or even limited.
As I mentioned in another thread, watching FSU really reminded me a bit of da Bares - they have a post in Howard who is a good matchup for Chiney, a mammoth player off the bench in 6'5" Kia James, and Cheetah Delgado reminds me a bit of Brittany Boyd - plays real fast and on the edge of control, but isn't a great threat outside. The Seminoles had one player who seemed to be a threat from outside, in Lauren Coleman, but only went 2 and a few minutes from James deep on the bench.
This game, we again gave up way to easy penetration - the Coyotes would cut diagonally through the lane, and when the help came, found a player on the baseline for wide-open 12 foot jumpers. We need to control the drive better.
Worst moment of the game? Sara James brain-lock technical foul in front of Missy, slamming the ball to the floor after getting called for an obvious over the back foul. I don't think we'll see her start again, well, ever.
Good signs? Solid 3-point shooting, good play from Taylor 10 miles from her hometown, and solid play (if a few too many cheap fouls) by Amber and Lili. Monday, though, people are going to have to be willing to drive against an overplaying 2-3 zone, Amber especially, to split the top of it. And if Mikaela can't go, our best high post passer is out, which is really an important space against that defense.
