If we do recruit a QB in the class of 2015, I hope he will be comfortable with spending the majority of his career riding the pines. Unless he is the second coming of Andrew Luck, that is what will most likely happen.

A) We would all hope so, obviously.  The guy we missed out on in 2012 was Jameis Winston.  OK, so maybe his off-field issues would have made him a bad fit here, but no one can deny his talent.

B) There is a tendency to assume that unproven guys on the roster will all or mostly pan out.  Keep in mind that of the wealth of riches we had behind Luck, neither Nunes (4*/#19 QB on scout) nor Nottingham (4*/#14 QB) really panned out.  Now, I am hearing great things about Burns already, so there is good reason to be optimistic (bolstered by the fact that Lloyd is being moved to safety, so Lloyd may have seen the writing and the coaches probably feel fine), but I was hearing great things about Nottingham initially as well.

QB is simply too important a position, and because it is a singular position, it is not like you can really move a player from another position in there to shore up depth (as we did, for example, with DE when depth became a concern there), or safety, where we are moving, ironically, a QB.

The closest analogy I can find is running back.  Right now we have six running backs on the roster: Tyler Gaffney, Anthony Wilkerson, Ricky Seale, Remound Wright, Kelsey Young, Barry J Sanders.  Next year we have Christian McCaffrey coming in and Brandt-Smith (if he is being looked at as a RB) so we may still have six RB's on the roster.  Yes, RB is slightly different because you can get reps to multiple players in a way that is atypical for QB's excepting garbage time.  But still, you need to have more than three because, Miles Jack excepted, it is atypical to move a player into the position.

For me, I think five is the ideal number for QB's and RB's.  It lets you recruit an average of one a year assuming a redshirt season, but lets you skip a year in a bad year, and take two in a bumper crop.  You don't want fewer than four or more than six, generally.
