In other sad news, I discovered that the hard drive containing all of my 2011 games died an untimely death :(  Ah well.

You might try the freezer trick. It sounds like an urban legend, but worked for me on a couple of hard drives that were dying. Got them both going again just long enough to copy all the data off.
