First of all, I'd dispute bad NFL coach worked for them. Pete Carroll is actually a good NFL coach, as Richard Sherman would be happy to tell you, at long length, over and over again. But even granting the premise the track record is not fantastic. After all, dearly departed Lane was ALSO a bad NFL coach. As was Bill Callahan at Nebraska... I would say the record of getting coaches slumming from the NFL is more bad than good. Even granting the Peter Principle, why go perverse and hire someone who was bad at his last head job? Doesn't make much sense. Del Rio has rarely coached against college schemes, hasn't coached college kids and has never recruited. Why not hire someone...who's coached against college schemes, coached college kids, and has recruited (preferably all well)? It's a crazy idea, but I promise you it works.

Your premise is goofy. Not only would Del Rio not be available quickly (he has a job), but Haden doesn't need anyone quickly either. Firing Kiffin has enhanced SC's position among recruits, not detracted from it. A four-star DE moved SC to his top three specifically because they fired Kiff.
I really hope Haden restricts himself to former SC alums. Such restrictions are always the sign of a dumb search.
