56 was the number of players. Of course it gets worse with injuries. Lee and Craven were both hurt during the game. The available number will likely drift below 50 by the time Nov 16th comes along. SC will get to add 19 (15 + 4 early) with this class, but right now they don't have 19. Any 19 are going to carry a 3-star average at best. The number exiting will likely exceed 19, and their recruiting rating average will be 4+. (Both the 2009 & 2010 classes had 4 star averages) So 2014 will be brutal, at least in my eyes. And yet...
Haden said today on ESPN that he thinks a national championship is possible NEXT YEAR!!! Way to help the next coach keep expectations reasonable.
Ironically, the "good" news with any season ending injuries would be that those players might not be able to leave for the NFL. So oddly, Lee's injury may help USC in 2014.
Since USC needs 19 recruits and needs 4 of them to enroll at USC in January, I would guess Haden needs a name in November. I guess his list is good because he is not doing anything to keep expectations in check.
Today I had one USC fan tell me that David Shaw is a name he was told is on the list. That fan had no real insight, but was well connected to the USC fan rumor/wish list.
My guess is Jack Del Rio would be an excellent pick. He is a USC alum. He played in the NFL and coached in the NFL too. He lost a bunch in Jacksonville, so he could handle losing in 2014. One problem with Del Rio is that he is with the Broncos right now. So he might not be able to leave before Denver's season is over. That would be a big time problem for recruiting.
