I had an old high school friend and football teammate who went to CalTech. He said it was fine, never described it as an ordeal. Said his classmates were incredible nerds (he was a fairly normal guy), but once you got past that things were OK. He was on the football team and said it was a bit of a joke. You never knew who was going to show up to practice because people had labs or just wouldn't feel like coming.

He ended up as a math professor and spent some time at Under Stanford Control. He always used to complain because his blackboards would fall down. His comment was"I bet John Robinson's blackboards don't fall down."
