I wouldn't be too certain about that. In the winter of 1998, on another Stanford board, a poster who was widely believed to be Anthony Bookman wrote that his SAT score was 960 and it wasn't the lowest on the team. And that would have been under the allegedly tyrannical admissions regime of Robin Mamlet.
That's why I used the term "probably". A lot depends, as gets pointed out here frequently, on how the rest of his application looks. Lots of A's in AP courses, great recommendations, great essay, and who knows? I wouldn't hold my breath, though, especially if the coaches are telling him he needs to take it again and he decides he doesn't want to.
