My guess is he likes the Stanford academics/athletics combination, but just doesn't want to go that far from home, so he is trying to convince himself a closer school is just as good.

Distance is definitely a factor for many kids here in the Southeast. It certainly was for the local HS kid here in Tallahassee (his coach played HS football with my sons) who was offered by Stanford but just chose FSU.

Funny how distance is never seems a factor for USC recruits from the east coast.  It's like something other than the school itself has a pull on 17 and 18 YOs.  I wonder what that could be?
