People tell me the rivalry was friendly, and I see vestiges of it, but sometime, possibly during the wining streak, or possibly when Stanford became an elite university, it started getting really ugly on the other side. It became a matter of not just beating Stanford, but hating us. An older Cal fan friend of mine told me that there was a time that people always dressed up for Big Game, but that same fan attended a rally in the mid 1990s, and never attended again because he said that traditions had been replaced by screeds about how much people hated Stanford. You can see it on the 59er Insider where people have criticized Stanford because they could walk on campus with a Cal shirt on and not get assaulted, or that we sell House Divided merchandise with both Cal and Stanford logos in the bookstore. For me, they are rivals, not enemies.
