As is the case with many a college song, they are all stolen from somewhere. I'll never forget the first time I heard the Stanford Jonah after spending the entire night out and about before rolling into a foggy Stanford Stadium for Big Game '85. I know I'm out of it, but wait, what?
As fellow alumni of the I (yeah, that doesn't really work, does it?) Ramblin' Wreck traces its lineage back to a 19th century Irish drinking titled "Son of a Gambolier". It was first adopted by Yale and then by Dickinson College (home of our very own MizzouCard), South Dakota Mines, Colorado Mines, Ohio State, and RPI. Mines was my second or third choice ultimately and I remember going home my first summer getting a bunch of grief from high school friends who stayed in Golden over how we stole their song. I think that grief was not misplaced. Here are the lyrics to Mines' fight song, The Mining Engineer, and they are careful to point out it predates Tech's "famous version" by more than 30 years:
I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three hundred pounds.
The college bell to mix it in and a clapper to stir it 'round.
Like every honest fellow, I take my whiskey clear,
I'm a ramblin' wreck from Golden Tech, a helluva engineer.
My only reply was 'Yeah, well we use three thousand pounds of sugar with our barrel of rum and we're famous. Let me know when Mines is getting destroyed by Georgia on national TV.'
Tech's presidency just opened up if anyone is interested. Hard shoes to fill, but I hear the house is nice.
