Keeping traditions is not always a good thing.  I don't think that having the Tree choose its successor is a good method.  I think the entire band should choose.  I also don't have a problem with the Tree being "performed" by several different humans.  This would allow the Tree to attend more events.  If more than one identical Tree costume was available, the Tree could even make appearances at simultaneous events. 

I do agree that the administration should let the Stanford band be the Stanford Band.

Yeah, we've been told for years that the Tree is the Band's mascot, not the university's. It makes sense for the Band to choose the tree. You definitely want to keep the Tree the Tree, rather than some admin-ordained idea of what the Tree should be <shudder>.

But I could be talked out of it if, say, they decide to give KP a full-time job as Tree (write your own jokes).
